Those were the days...

Where were you when a 1.7m, 68kg giant won his final Open Championship four decades ago this month? As golf's oldest major championship heads to Royal Liverpool, nine-time Major Championship winner and golf icon Gary Player will celebrate the 40th anniversary of his 1974 Open Championship victory at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club. "That was one of the best victories of my career, and one that I am particularly proud of as I became only the man in the modern era to win the Open Championship in three separate decades," he said. Many remember the tournament for the Black Knight's dramatic shot on the final hole of the Championship. Player was forced to chip left-handed with his trusted blade putter following a second shot that flew over the green to land alongside the stone clubhouse wall. The shot defined Player's tournament after the ball unbelievably landed 10 feet from the hole, setting up his third Open victory.

OTHER HALL OF FAMERS IN THE NEWS

* Retief Goosen has pulled out of the Open Championship final qualifier at Glasgow Gailes without giving a reason. Goosen, the two-time US Open champion, was to compete in the 36-hole shoot-out in Ayrshire but his no-show means he's effectively out of the Open.

* Nick Price has once again been chosen to Captain the International Team for the 2015 Presidents Cup. The 2015 event is being played in South Korea from 8th to 11th October and with that in mind, Nick has chosen KJ Choi as his Vice-Captain. Jay Haas will captain the U.S. team. He has been Vice-Captain to Fred Couples at the last three events and he has already named Freddie as one of Vice-Captains.

* Charity will once again take center stage as a spectacular field of professional golfers, celebrities, and businessmen gather for the Berenberg Gary Player Invitational to take place at Wentworth on July 20-21. As part of the world's leading charity series, the European leg of Gary Player Invitational (GPI) series promises to be another thrilling union of golf and giving to aid underprivileged children. The event is the second tournament of the GPI series, which also includes events in the US, China, and South Africa.

IN OTHER NEWS

* Zander Lombard came within a whisker of winning the Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush. Perthshire starlet Bradley Neil became the first Scots winner of the event by beating the South African rival 2&1 in the 36-hole final to book his place at next month's Open Championship and the 2015 US Open in Tacoma. Lombard, who was hoping to become only the second South African winner after Bobby Cole in 1966, was still pleased with his efforts. The 19-year-old said: "I'm very pleased with my achievement. My golf's been good all week. We both played really solid golf today and I have to say thumbs-up to Bradley."

* Golf sensation Scott Vincent made history by being named a PING First-Team All-American as selected by a committee of the Golf Coaches Association of America. Vincent is the first-ever Virginia Tech golfer (Hokie) to garner first team honours from the GCAA. The Zimbabwean is one of two Atlantic Coast Conference golfers in the first team. He is ranked eighth by Golfstat and 16th by Golfweek Sagarin. Vincent finished tied for 35th at the 2014 NCAA Men's Golf Championships last week in Hutchinson, Kansas, and finished third in the 2014 NCAA Auburn Regional on May 17. He finished sixth at the 61st Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Golf Championships in April. During the 2013-14 season, Vincent became the first golfer in college history to win three individual tournament titles in a season.

WHO AM I?

Born in 1969. Among my 66 career victories are four major championships. Other highlights in my career include topping the 2003 and 2004 European Tour Order of Merit (money list), and winning the World Match Play Championship a record seven times. I was the leading career money winner on the European Tour until overtaken by Lee Westwood in 2011, and was the first member of the tour to earn over 25 million Euros from European Tour events. I held the number one spot in the Official World Golf Ranking and until 2013 held the record for weeks ranked in the top ten with 788.
