OTHER HALL OF FAMERS IN THE NEWS

* Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer announced the grand opening of the 2014 Masters with ceremonial tee shots at 7:40 a.m. Thursday morning. Jack and Gary's shots landed side-by-side in the fairway with the Golden Bear a few inches past the Black Knight. Arnie found the fairway, but was a little ways behind.

* Ernie Els offered to buy a spectator a bullet-proof vest after he hit her left breast with an errant shot which sent her crashing to the ground. Els rushed to apologise but she assured him she ok. The incident happened at the second hole of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

* Retief Goosen will compete in this weekend's Players Championship, thanks to a spirited performance in the Shell Houston Open that ensured he qualified. Having played in just nine tournaments in 2013, Goosen's major medical extension provided him with 13 tournaments in 2013-14 which he needed to make $280 000. He handled the challenge beautifully, shooting 68-71-71-70 to finish in a share of seventh.

WHO AM I?

I was born on a farm in Bindura, Rhodesia in 1953. My step-father was an amateur pilot who had an airstrip on the farm. When my step-father was diagnosed with epilepsy, he was forced to give up flying, so he converted the airstrip into a three-hole golf course. This is where I first learned to play golf. I won 51 times around the world in a 27-year career and cracked the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking for 83 weeks from 1987 to 1992. I became an Irish citizen at the age of 50 in 2003. I currently live in Sunningdale, England.

Answer: Mark McNulty

QUOTABLE QUOTES

"It's hard to describe how it felt when the putt went in. At first, it's a relief. Just a huge, huge relief that you've done it."

- Ernie Els describing his victory at the 2002 Open Championship at Muirfield

"The greatest technology in the future is going to be eating, how athletes eat. The night before I won the Grand Slam (in 1965), I was exercising profusely, struggling with 325 pounds on a Saturday night, and everybody said, "You can't do that and then play golf. You're finished, you'll never have a long career"."

- Gary Player

"I was born in South Africa, raised in Rhodesia, I have a British passport and I live in the US. You pick one."

- Nick Price when asked by reporters to explain his nationality

"Ah yes, I very nearly lost four of the first five tournaments I played in."

- Bobby Locke when asked whether he had any difficulty adjusting to the game in the US in 1947. His seven victories in the US that year set a record never achieved before (or since) by a foreign golfer.
