All eyes on Hall of Fame giant

Ten years ago, Ernie Els and Tiger Woods were the hot favourites at The Open at Muirfield, but the American suffered a near collapse in the third round which ended his 2002 Grand Slam bid and launched his longest winless streak in the Majors. Els was in contention from the start and he secured a place in the four-hole play-off against Thomas Levet, Steve Elkington and Stuart Appleby. Despite finding the greenside bunker at the 18th Els spun the loosest, loveliest flop shot to one metre from the pin. He guided the putt home for his first Open victory (he had two US Open titles under his belt). Next month Els who is the defending Open champion following his thrilling victory at Lytham last year will attempt to do it all over again at Muirfield with all of South Africa rooting for him.

Who am I?

I worked as a mechanic before I took up the game. I was designated as "Coloured" under the Apartheid racial classification scheme and, as a result, was unable to play on the Southern African Tour in my prime. However, with assistance from Gary Player, I gained entry to tournaments around the world, and in 1976 pulling my own caddy-cart, I won the European Tour's French Open. The following month, for political reasons I turned down my selection to represent South Africa in the World Cup as Gary Player's partner. I made a comeback in the over-50 ranks, finishing in the top twenty on the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit four times in the 1990s.

"There's no player alive that's had their heart ripped out and played their best golf and taken more swings at Tiger and not knocked him out than Ernie Els."

- Claude Harmon III

"Watching Phil Mickelson play golf is like watching a drunk chasing a balloon near the edge of a cliff."
